This quote reminds us that even with our best laid plans, God is ultimately the one who is in control. We might have a clear vision of how we would like to accomplish something, but very seldom does our path coincide with our vision. As this year is winding down and as my service in this capacity comes to an end, I am amazed at how true this Proverb is as it relates to my path.

This passage reminds me how small lapses, neglected relationships, unattended spiritual life, or deferred responsibilities can grow into real problems that steal our joy and productivity. Practically speaking, it also brought to mind a conversation I once had with an old friend of mine, Steve Howell Jr. about “mending our fences.”

This quote by Thomas Jefferson means that what people often call “luck” is usually the result of effort and persistence. Success doesn’t simply happen by chance; instead, the more someone works, prepares, and puts themselves in situations where opportunities can arise, the “luckier” they appear to others. Hard work increases skills, knowledge, and exposure to opportunities, which makes positive outcomes more likely.
