Throughout Florida’s history, cattle producers have understood a simple truth: the land doesn’t belong to us forever. We are simply its caretakers for a season. That belief is the inspiration behind Florida Cattlemen’s Association President John Williamson’s theme for the coming year—”Keepers of His Land.” It is a reminder that ranchers have long balanced the responsibility of producing food with protecting the natural resources that make ranching possible.

As I write my second article as your FCA President, I recognize that nothing truly prepares you for the complexities of our industry. Like most presidents, I started with a wish list and an agenda, but our focus quickly shifted to more pressing issues.

If you’ve ever gathered a big bunch of headstrong cattle with just a small but capable crew, you know there’s a moment when the big gate swings shut, that everyone lets out a sigh of relief for getting them penned. The hard part is over—or so it seems. In reality, it’s just when the next job begins. Our annual convention is much the same. For months, our staff and volunteer leaders spend countless hours preparing for those few days together.
