The Headquarters' Range: July 2026

My focus as the Water and Environmental Manager for the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, is on helping protect the long-term viability of Florida’s cattle operations by working at the junction of ranching, water, and environmental policy.

In addition to providing ‘industry-level’ support, I enjoy and am available to assist with your property specific water and environment resource questions or concerns. Whether it is related to available funding programs, project concepts, agency contacts, regulatory and non-compliance issue resolutions, and/or changes in water resources from adjacent development, I will utilize my 35+ years of FL water and environmental experience to help members accomplish objectives.

Water supply and water quality will continue to dominant water resource concerns as Florida continues to be rapidly developed. Traditional water supply sources need to be retained for agriculture and alternative sources developed for public water supply. While much of Florida recently received welcome rainfall, the State’s Water Management Districts are still reminding residents, businesses and landowners that drought conditions remain severe and that a single rain event will not erase months of significant water deficits. If possible, multiple water sources should be provided for cattle watering to ensure availability during drought conditions. Cost-share and assistance programs are available.

We hoped that you enjoyed this year’s speakers on environmental initiatives at the annual convention such as the FL Wildlife Corridor and Payment for Ecosystem Services and agency updates including the new SB848 Stormwater and Water Quality Credits. These establish a credit-based system for water quality improvements, formally creating voluntary opportunities of landowner Water Quality Enhancement Areas (WQEAs), allowing developers to buy enhancement credits instead of treating stormwater on localized sites.

Florida’s cattle ranches provide tremendous environmental benefits while sustaining a vital agricultural industry. We are trying to build our network of “Hats in the Room” at the various agency and organization meetings taking place across the State.
