Quote of the Month:
“Definition of an ‘X-Spurt’: The X is an unknown, and a spurt is nothing but a drip. Therefore, an ‘X-Spurt’ is an unknown drip.” – Woody Tilton, late 1990s
I have always appreciated the wisdom of old-time Florida “Crackers” like Mr. Woody Tilton. He had a way of delivering humor that made you laugh first and think later. His definition of an “X-Spurt” was one of those moments. Beneath the humor was a valuable reminder: not everyone who speaks with confidence speaks with knowledge.
There are true experts—men and women who have earned their credibility through experience, hard work, and results. When they speak, we benefit from listening. Then there are the “X-Spurts”—those who may sound informed but lack the depth of understanding to back it up. Sometimes misinformation spreads unintentionally, but the impact can still be significant.
As members of the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, it is important that we stay informed, engaged, and connected to credible leadership within our industry.
If you have ever been told that your cattle operation is too small to have a voice in FCA, do not believe it. Whether you run zero cows or ten thousand, you have one vote. FCA is a grassroots organization built on member involvement, and every voice matters. I strongly encourage you to attend quarterly meetings and participate in FCA events whenever possible.
Member engagement is growing, and it shows. At our Legislative Quarterly in January, we had a record-breaking attendance of more than 200 members. Together, we visited legislators and ensured that FCA’s priorities were clearly communicated. That is the power of participation.
It has been a busy season, with FCA members traveling across Florida and throughout the country to promote and defend our way of life. Recently, I have had the privilege of participating in:
• Allied Institute and Trade Show (Wauchula)
• SFWMD Cattle Lease Tour (Okeechobee)
• FCA Legislative Quarterly (Tallahassee)
• The Great Florida Cattle Drive (Okeechobee)
• NCBA Convention (Nashville, TN)
A personal highlight was the Great Florida Cattle Drive, where more than 300 participants gathered to celebrate over 500 years of Florida’s cattle heritage. It was an outstanding event that showcased the strength, tradition, and unity of our industry. My hat is off to David Hunt, Travis Brown, Jim McCallister, Tobitha Bellamy, and the many others who helped organize such a meaningful celebration. Job well done!
Thank you for your continued involvement, com
mitment, and trust. It is an honor to serve and to #LeadTheWay for this great organization.
Sincerely,
Rick Moyer
