Jan. FCW Report

Though I’ve never been big on making a New Year’s resolution, I do appreciate the opportunity the New Year seems to naturally provide for annual self-evaluation.  What is working?  What isn’t?  What needs more time?  What is overdue?  The New Year brings a new fiscal year and installation of new officers for the Florida CattleWomen: excellent timing for our organization to reflect on the effectiveness of our beef promotion and education efforts and internal procedures.  In response to changes in technology and the evolving role of women in the beef industry, the FCW is excited to pursue new ventures such as enhanced outreach via digital media and videoconferencing for our board members.

January Promotion Tip
Some estimates say that 40% of Americans will make a New Year’s Resolution.  Improving physical well-being is among the most popular goals.  Take advantage of the ‘clean eating’ craze: consider an in-store demo featuring ‘minimally processed beef’ (and earn money for your county CW in the process!).  Travel to one of Florida’s populous coastal communities to maximize impact.  No time for that?  No problem!  You can promote beef on your own schedule, from home using social media.  Find a recipe online and like/pin/tweet/share it along with some healthy beef facts.  Easier still: Like the FCW on Facebook and share our posts.

Know Your Beef…Better
Food choices are a very personal decision, with many contentious issues.  If you missed the Know Your Beef Short Course in September and would like tips for communicating with consumers about some of beef’s ‘hot button issues’,  I’m happy to forward the presentation.  The training tools are available at www.piecenter.com (presentations navigation tab).  The UF PIE Center, who provided the training, has numerous other resources available on the website, and is hosting a GMO webinar on January 28th.

On a Personal Note
While serving on the nominating committee during her past-president year, Jan Dillard invited me to serve on the Executive Board.  Since then, I have gone from a single girl working at the Range Cattle Center in Ona to a stay-home mom with a family of five.  I hope that my varied perspectives and experiences will serve to further the mission of the FCW in a way that would’ve made Jan proud.   Thank you for allowing me to serve you and our industry this year.
