February FCW Report
On my first official day as President of FCW, I was honored to attend the “Ride for the Fight” Cancer Benefit in Okeechobee County at the Cattlemen’s arena on Hwy. 441. Founded by Nano Corona, a cattleman and cancer survivor, the first annual benefit included ranch horse bucking and bull riding by ranching cowboys and a few ‘professional’ riders. This non-profit organization’s mission is to support the caregiver and the patient during their fight against cancer or any other medical dilemma. Nano was very appreciative of the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Association and their act of donating the arena for this event. Nano said , “It is wonderful to be able to have this great facility available for benefits such as this.” The newly restored arena will be hosting several more community benefits in the future, as well as their annual Spring Rodeo in March.
There are so many important events in February! First, a quick reminder to those who wanted to attend the NCBA/ANCW National Convention in Nashville, TN. You’re almost out of time! It begins on Monday the third and goes through Friday the seventh of February. Come and see what the industry is cooking up!
The Florida Beef Ambassador Contest will occur at the FCA office in Kissimmee on February 1st. Contact Tami Newsome at (813)376-4966 if you have any questions about this wonderful program.
Another important event for our members is the Florida State Fair in Tampa from February 6th – 17th. Please contact Lindsey John at (941)737-2928 or Wendy Petteway at (863)781-3986 if there is a day or half day that you could help out. Single worker volunteers are needed for all days, so don’t worry about planning with others! Take this opportunity to spread the good word about beef!
Our purpose as cattlewomen is to promote the purchase and consumption of beef and share our family values with others. This includes the preservation of our land and the wildlife it supports. I have found that it is easy to talk about the subjects you love, and I love ranching and living in a place where wildlife is abundant. My purpose this year is to find other cattlewomen who are as passionate as I am but don’t have time to take on large projects, like being president of FCW!
Take the month of February to heart by declaring it your own personal “I Love Beef!” month. Please drop me a note to tell me about important happenings in your area. Even if I can’t attend everything, I’d be honored to mention it here in my article. See you in Nashville!
