The U.S. Congress passed legislation to repeal the mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) law for red meat products. The action prevents Mexico and Canada from imposing over $1 billion in retaliatory tariffs on multiple U.S. Products. The retaliation was approved by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on December 7. The action comes after 7 years of disputes brought by Mexico and Canada to the WTO claiming that the U.S. COOL law for red meat violated international treaty obligations. USDA will amend the COOL registration to reflect the repeal of the beef and pork provisions. All imported and domestic meat will continue to be subject to rigorous inspections by USDA to ensure food safety.
The Beef for the Holidays campaign concluded on December 31. The final results of the campaign will be published in the March issue.
FCW will have participants in the BEEFit 5K Fun Run/Walk on January 28 held during the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in San Diego, California. Go FLORIDA Team Beef!
Please note that FCW dues increased to $25.00 effective September 1, 2015, and are now payable annually on the member’s anniversary date. If you haven’t yet renewed your membership please do so prior to the Convention in June. Please also remember to pay your ANCW dues.
